Beware: The latest drug trend for kids is to huff Freon from air conditioners.
That means your properties’ air conditioners could be targeted by teens looking for a high.
(And we thought all we had to worry about with our air conditioners this summer was copper theft).
According to an article by Arnold Wyrick of KFVS12 News, kids are now siphoning off the Freon and huffing it.
They do it by placing a plastic bag over their heads, filling it with Freon, and then getting high as the Freon replaces oxygen in the bag. Freon is a heavier gas than oxygen.
I don’t have to mention this is a very, very dangerous practice. Warn your children.
Not only can kids die the very first time they try it, but they are doing irreparable damage to their brains and nervous systems. This damage may not be seen immediately but can cause needless suffering for the kids later as problems develop also in the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
What are the tell tale signs your child, or any child, is doing this?
A bizarre frost bite condition around the nose. The area around the nose will appear white.
How can we protect our air conditioners and our kids?
Invest in a locking device which will prevent Freon access. These can be bought for around $30 at any hardware store and are very easy to install.
